Tāhunanui sawdust remediation update

4 April 2024

📣 Update: Tāhunanui sawdust remediation

Yesterday (4 April), elected members voted to approve funding to continue short-term measures to contain the contaminated sawdust material at the Tāhunanui Back Beach.

They also approved funding for planning, design, and pre-construction work for a long-term remediation solution.

To continue this work, the raised carpark at the Back Beach will be closed Monday 8 April to Friday 12 April.

This closure is to allow contractors to do more drilling that will help inform plans for removing the contaminated material from the area and remediate the site.

🦎 Ecological survey

Also starting Monday 8 April at the Back Beach is a month-long ecological survey to understand the populations and habitats of wildlife in the area.

This survey will ensure wildlife is protected ahead of any future work taking place at the site.

The survey and equipment will be marked and signs will be posted in the area.

🙏 We kindly ask that you do not disturb the equipment used for the survey.

The beach will otherwise be open as usual during this period.
