Sheet piling is about to begin

6 July 2023

Recently Completed Work:

The work on the St Vincent Street infrastructure upgrade project has been progressing well. The underground electrical cables have been upgraded, as has the sewer infrastructure within the St Vincent Street and Hastings Street intersection.

With this work complete, our contractor can now construct the large underground stormwater chamber and the connecting pipes.

To complete this work, we have had to temporarily close the St Vincent Street and Hastings Street intersection. Detours are in place for all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists. These detours are shown on the diagram above, along with suggested access arrangements for local businesses.

Sheet piling:

Closing the road or certain footpaths will not be the only disruption that residents and businesses may face with this project. The next step in construction is sheet piling in St Vincent Street, which is required so we can build the large underground stormwater mixing chamber. This is expected to take up to two months.

Sheet piles are big steel beams that are driven into the ground to prevent trenches from collapsing when they are dug. This makes it a lot safer for our contractor to carry out their work. This activity can cause both noise and vibrations and is expected to last a week. There will also be noise created by a pump that will need to be run to make sure salt water from the tide does not come up the existing pipes.

Why are we doing this?

All of this work will improve the infrastructure to make sure the area can better manage the impacts of climate change and development into the future. It is also essential to realise the benefits of other work that has already been completed in the area.

We will do everything we can to minimise the impact on you and would really appreciate it if you let us know if you have any concerns.

This work on St Vincent Street is scheduled to be completed in late November 2023. We will be in touch in the coming months as work progresses.

It is worth noting that future work is required to connect the new stormwater pipe from St Vincent Street/Hastings Street intersection through to the Haven Road intersection. This work is currently planned for 2024/2025.
