Interpretation Panels to be installed

1 September 2023

We are happy to announce that two iwi interpretation panels (one in Māori and the other in English) are proposed to be installed at a location chosen by iwi, shown in the image below.

The panels will be positioned on a structure, all designed by a renowned Māori artist who specialises in this type of work.

The site of the Seafield Terrace rock revetment project is culturally significant to local iwi. In order to get the resource consent required to do the job, we worked with iwi from Ngāti Kuia, Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, and Rangitane. A condition was placed on the consent that we installed an interpretation panel (or other identifier) describing the importance of this site to local iwi.

We are legally obligated to do this.

A great deal of time and careful consideration has been taken by iwi to develop an appropriate concept and wording that reflects the area’s important history. We have taken the time to work with iwi who have statutory acknowledgements over the area, and all have agreed on the carefully chosen wording. (Note: Statutory Acknowledgement is a formal acknowledgement by the Crown that recognises the particular cultural, spiritual, historical and traditional association an iwi has with a site of significance or resource identified as a statutory area).

We are expecting siteworks and installation will commence within the next two months. The concrete pad will need to cure for one month before it is engraved. After that, the interpretation panel structure will be installed.
