The 1.8m stormwater pipes are in!

1 December 2022

We have reached a major milestone for the project, with the installation of the stormwater pipe in both Rutherford Street and Waimea Road. These works have been underway since the start of the project, which began back in July 2022.

The next lot of asphalt surfacing work is booked for early December along Rutherford Street and Examiner Street, which will allow us to open Examiner Street to traffic again and widen things up along Rutherford Street. We do however have small tasks to complete outside the Ngāti Kuia building and the other side of Rutherford, so you may notice some minor changes to the road layout as we carry out these jobs.

With less than a month until the Christmas holidays there is still a bit of work to complete. A few of these key tasks have been summarised below.

Waimea Road – Opening Soon

Now that the stormwater pipework has been completed in Waimea Road, and the new watermain on the western side is being tested and connected, we can start the process of reconstructing the road and finishing the asphalt surfacing. Sections of the kerb and channel will also be renewed, along with the footpath surface and fencing along the top of the Nelson College for Girls playing field (“Little Wembley”).

We are still on target to have Waimea Road opened for Christmas, which will be another great milestone for the project.

Wellington Street

Wellington Street will need to close intermittently for up to two weeks in early December so we can complete final resurfacing works and remove redundant watermain connections. Access will still be available into Wellington Street via Examiner Street, as it was in earlier stages on the project. Residents will have access to the street during the evening.

Bronte Street Intersection

Bronte Street Intersection has been a challenging section of road to work through due to the location of existing underground services and the work required to connect this existing network to our new pipes. These challenges have led to the work taking slightly longer than originally programmed.

Towards the end of the year...

Getting Waimea Road open before Christmas will be our focus in the final few weeks of 2022. We will have another update for everyone before Christmas so keep an eye out for this in the coming weeks.
