This area on Maitai Valley Road was affected by the August 2022 weather event and included both the headscarp (hillside) and embankment above the Maitai River.

Council’s consultants regularly undertake inspections to gauge the stability of the headscarp and as part of that work.

Following the weather events during April 2025 through to July 2025 this inspection identified ground slumping near the Botanical Hill access track that could lead to more of the slope giving way, covering the footpath or road below. There’s also a risk of a large rock at the base of the slip breaking off and falling onto the road. The result of this assessment was to close the road to one lane using containers.

Contractors are working to stabilise the slip. To allow this work to happen, there is a pedestrian/cyclist detour in place.

There is also traffic management in place, that aligns with the work underway to install new pipes for the Maitahi development.
