Work has begun on the Paru Paru Road carpark. The start date was delayed due to the discovery of asbestos.

As the carpark site was previously an old landfill, small traces of asbestos have been identified in the soil. To ensure the safety of contractors and the public, additional health and safety measures will be implemented throughout the project.

This carpark will provide parking for the new play space, further parking capacity for recreational and other events at Rutherford Park or Trafalgar Centre, and parking close to the city centre to mitigate loss of carparking as part of the Bridge to Better project and the Nelson Bus Hub redevelopment.
