With a focus on developing our City Centre, Council resolved on 22 September 2022 to move the Nelson City Bus Hub from Bridge Street to Millers Acre.

The location was determined after a mult-criteria analysis was undertaken of potential locations around the city centre. The decision was in line with the intent of Te Ara ō Whakatū (CCSP), which had a strong preference for bus interchange and passenger stops located on the ring roads to enable people-focused, place-based outcomes in the city centre.

With the growth of the eBus network, we are seeing the Bridge Street bus terminus is also at capacity, and is disconnected from other regional bus services.

The Bridge Street location also does not fit with the Bridge to Better project, which is encouraging greater active modes of transport on Bridge Street. Buses would not be suitable for the narrower streets that are proposed to be part of the infrastructure upgrade, which starts construction in 2026.

What is proposed?

The new bus interchange will include six new bus bays for eBus services, and regional bus services such as Intercity. Provision for Local bus services and tourist services to Golden Bay and the National Parks are also included in the design.

A new waiting room is proposed for a more comfortable user experience. The area will be landscaped to tie the new interchange in with the city centre and the development on Bridge Street.

Construction is due to begin in mid-2025, with the aim for the project to be completed by the end of 2025.
