Here comes Phase 2!

2 June 2021

Resident Update - June 2021

We have received a lot of feedback and community input into the design of Phase 2. Some great ideas came out of the community meeting, and the final design is a direct result of the feedback that has been given to us.

Thank you all for your willingness and contribution to the design and planning.

On 14 June 2021, the trial of Phase 2 will get underway. This phase is focused on making the area safer and more user-friendly for walking and cycling. This is the final stage of the Nelson South Innovating Streets trial.

Key trial measures include:

  • Widening of the footpath outside of Nelson Intermediate School – Completed
  • Installing a bike repair station in front of Nelson Intermediate
  • Widening of the footpath on Boundary Rd and improved connection to the railway reserve
  • A lot more trees and less bright colours
  • Further traffic claiming on Kawai St South, Boundary Rd and Tipahi Street – mostly focused on Tipahi Street
  • Pollinator Park at the Tipahi Street corner connecting to the Railway Reserve

Will I still be able to access my house while the trial measures are being installed?

To install the trial measures, the roads in the area will need to be closed to through traffic. Residents will still have access, but there may be some delays.

We appreciate your patience while the trial measures are installed, and please keep providing feedback to help us understand how the trial is affecting you and your neighbourhood.

What next after the trial is installed?

Once the trial measures have been installed, we want to hear from you about how it is going. We will put a survey up on Shape Nelson, and will look to hold a community event after a few months to get feedback.

We’ve had great feedback from the Nelson South community, and hope that you join your neighbours in supporting this project.

How do you use a 4-way stop?

We have been asked a number of times about the rules relating to 4-way stops. They are as follows:

Step 1: Stop
Step 2: Give way to your right.
Step 3: Give way to straight through traffic if you are turning across or into this
vehicle’s straight through path
Step 4: Be kind and courteous to each other.
