Giving things a go - in real life!

1 April 2021

Phase 2 - Community Event – 17 April 2021

We would like to do a LIVE trial of possible options on Tipahi Street, for residents to consider what best achieves a safer street for all users (Phase 2 – Innovating Streets). The trial will occur at the following times:

  • 15 April – 11:30 am -12:30 pm - Student Event
  • 17 April - 9:30 am – 11:30 am - Layout 1
  • 17 April - 1:00 pm – A3:00 pm - Layout 2

This event will be held on Tipahi St between Tukuka St and Kawai St S. This will be a live demonstration of how the street could look for residents only.

The design for the Tipahi Corner will be laid out and you will be able to provide feedback on the design.

Trees will be placed in apple crates and will be trialled down the middle of the road (layout 1) and then alternating on each side (layout 2). You will be able to provide feedback on these layout options.

Other options are being considered around the rest of the project area to improve walking and cycling connections. These options will be on display for your comment.

All other feedback will also be welcome. We have had some great feedback from the Nelson South community and hope that you join your neighbours in supporting this project.

Resident update – March / April 2021

At the beginning of March, the Innovating Streets Project team held an event at Nelson Intermediate School, to gather feedback from the community about Phase 1 and the future changes in Phase 2.

Feedback from that meeting has helped to come up with the solutions for Phase 2. The feedback means that future changes will contain more greenery and less colour. Further traffic calming devices will also be installed where speed is still a concern.

Signage will be developed to highlight that this is a residential zone and not a thoroughfare. This will be shared with residents before it is installed.

The project team will continue to communicate with Nelson South residents, so there are no surprises.

From your feedback on Phase 1, we have made a change on Kawai Street. One of the picnic tables that is located within each of the build-outs on Kawai St S has been replaced by a native tree.

We’d appreciate your feedback on this, and any other element of the Innovating Streets for People project, on 17 April.

The Innovating Streets project aims to:

  • Slow traffic
  • Reduce through traffic
  • Improve safety and accessibility
  • Encourage active transport modes
  • Reclaim streets for local people

Results so far on Kawai Street South include:

  • 30% less traffic
  • 20% less speed
