The changes on your street - Phase 2 complete

9 July 2021

The construction work on Phase 2 Innovating Streets - Nelson South trial is now complete.

This work has involved introducing a range of measures to help make it safer for people walking and cycling in the area.

Buildouts (using planter boxes and trees in crates), speed cushions and humps, bollards, signage and road art all play a role in slowing down traffic. This makes it safer for children travelling to and from Nelson Intermediate School (NIS) and other cyclists heading to and from the hospital and Nelson Colleges.

The corner of Tipahi Street (as it bends towards Kawai Street South) will be the location of a new "pollinator park". This pollinator park will be planted in late July, with residents being invited to join NIS pupils in planting a range of insect attracting plants. The road art (painted with special non-slip paint) on the corner plays a key role in making sure vehicles continue to travel slowly through this area, in between the two speed humps.

A huge thank you to all the residents and NIS students who have helped shape this trial. We will continue to take resident feedback to see if any changes are required to make it safer for cyclists and walkers travelling through the area.
