Chin Gardens Phase 1 taking shape at QEII Reserve

8 December 2025

Work is progressing well on the first stage of Nelson's Chin Gardens at QEII Reserve, with the Chin community's vision steadily becoming a reality.

Since breaking ground in late October, significant progress has been made on the foundational elements of the gardens.

Rock features are being carefully positioned to create focal points and natural boundaries, while pathways are being laid to guide visitors through the garden. Garden beds are being prepared for the plantings that will eventually bring colour and life to the area.

Situated next to the existing Miyazu Gardens, the Chin Gardens will complement this treasured community space, creating an extended area for reflection and connection for all of Nelson while sharing the unique culture of the Chin people.

The Chin community is leading the project under their 'Adopt a Spot' agreement with Council, making sure the finished garden reflects their cultural vision and values. The measured, incremental approach allows the gardens to develop thoughtfully, with each phase building on the last.

While there's still much work ahead, the progress made so far demonstrates the dedication and commitment of the Chin community to creating a meaningful space for generations to come. The first phase is expected to be near completion before Christmas, when a celebration will mark this important milestone.
