What's in the slot?

29 August 2024

On Monday 2 September 2024, investigation work will begin on Bridge Street (between Collingwood Street and Rutherford Street).

Starting with test pits

We will start with some test pits, on Monday 2 September, which will require the closure of the westbound lane of Bridge Street between Trafalgar Street and Montgomery Square carpark entrance. There will also be some private building work occurring in this lane closure, so they can leverage our traffic management. The left-hand turn from Bridge Street into Collingwood Street will also be closed for the day. This work is carried out using excavators, and there will be some noise with concrete cutters cutting the asphalt.

Then the slot trenches

On Tuesday (3 September) the slot trenches will begin (as long as the weather is playing ball). Each slot trench is 600mm wide and the length of the footpath. It will require a day to complete, digging the trench, inspecting the services, filling the trench back in and then resealing over the top.

We are trying to complete at least two trenches per day. The work will start early (just after 7:00 am), as we are trying to get the noisy work done as early as possible (using a Hydro-Vac - water jet and sucker truck).

The aim is to try and complete the trenches in the morning so that resealing with asphalt can occur in the afternoon.

We have tried to minimise the disruption as much as possible, and have been able to minimise lane closures by positioning the Hydro-vac truck in parking bays. While this will remove some parking, it will allow traffic to travel along Bridge Street.

The lane closures that are occurring are due to buildouts or verandas that will prevent the truck from being directly next to the footpath.

A big thank you to everyone for your patience while this essential work is underway.
