Bridge to Better update - week 5

14 November 2025

Bridge Street east

The first section of trenching has been backfilled, and drilling to install a new underground power cable has begun. This work needs to be completed ahead of the main construction period to ensure there’s enough capacity in the city’s power supply when other cables are removed next year.

Alma Street and Montgomery Square Laneways

Work in the laneways is progressing well. Concrete preparation has continued in both Alma Street and Montgomery Square laneways, with kerbing now complete in Montgomery and footpath preparation underway in Alma.

In Alma Street, work has progressed enough to allow the pedestrian accessways to Vivo Hair Salon, Nelson Skin Clinic and Prego Mediterranean Foods & Comida Cafe/Restaurant to be reconfigured, lowering some of the fencing and making increasing visibility and making access much more direct and convenient for customers.

Both laneways are starting to take shape. Crews will remain on site here over the coming weeks as paving and finishing works continue. When works are complete,

the Montgomery Square laneway will become exit only, and the Alma street laneway will become entry only.

Rutherford Street

On Rutherford/Halifax Street, crews are continuing with deep underground service installation and surface reinstatement. Work outside the former Four Seasons building will restart after Christmas, and the team is now progressing the installation of new sections of pipework and completing the necessary connections within the intersection, both on Paru Paru Road and outside Bowater Toyota.

On Friday, 14 November, Achilles Ave opened to allow drivers to exit Wakatu Car Park.
