70% Detailed Design
30 April 2025
We are far enough advanced in the detailed design to be able to share this with you. While there may be minor tweaks or changes, the majority of the design has been considered and finalised. This includes matching the underground infrastructure to the aboveground streetscape.
We have incorporated feedback from businesses, property owners and stakeholders, while balancing the infrastructure, transport and safety requirements for the street. A big thank you to everyone who has provided feedback to date; it has been very much appreciated.
The design will now be peer reviewed, to make sure everything is as expected from a technical perspective.
Key Changes:
The feedback that we have received has influenced the design. Key changes from the previous design include:
- The addition of two carparks to the Western end of the street outside Red Gallery. We've been able to fit this in without impacting the transport design, to allow safe access into Haven Road.
- Improved connectivity for the northbound cycleway on Haven Road towards ANZAC Park.
- We are currently proposing to change parking time limits on the street to P60 (1 hour parking). This is to encourage higher vehicle turnover for businesses, as the parking squares provide capacity for people who want to stay longer. There will also be some P10 (10 minute parking) spaces, and we are looking at loading zones being time restricted (i.e. Loading Zone up to 10 am and then public parking after that time).
- The accessible spaces on the Eastern end of Bridge Street have been moved across the road to be outside Lincraft (replacing the existing taxi stand). This adds additional parking spaces on the southern side of the street.
- We have worked with our iwi partners on the streetscape, creating a meaningful design that is cost-effective and easier to maintain. More information on this process will be shared in the months ahead.
Next feedback opportunities:
We will be going out to businesses, property owners and stakeholders to gather feedback on the latest designs and collect key information to allow the required changes to occur on the street.
The elements we would like feedback on over the next month are:
- Parking - will you be happy with P60 on Bridge Street, with some P10 in some locations? Will time-restricted Loading Zones mixed with parking work for you?
- Laneways - it is proposed that the two vehicle laneways from the parking squares onto Bridge Street are made one-way. This would improve foot traffic access to Bridge Street by having larger footpaths. Are you happy with this change?
- Design - is there anything else that we have missed or not considered with the design?
Please remember that there will be trade-offs, and while we can't meet everyone's desires, our goal is to have a street that property owners, businesses, residents and visitors want to be on.
Timing:
We are working with Isaac Construction, who is helping us with staging and the constructability of the project. There is a balance between getting work done as quickly as possible and minimising the disruption to people living, working and travelling through the street.
Work is progressing on this staging, and we will let everyone know when elements are confirmed in the months ahead.
We did hear from businesses that they wanted minimal work to occur over the Christmas time period. In order to achieve this, the team are looking to see if there is some pre-work that could be done in 2025.
