Public art plays a significant role in the social and cultural wellbeing of the Whakatū Nelson community. Several murals adorn the walls of Whakatū Nelson. They enhance and activate spaces, making them welcoming and vibrant.

The Awatea Place Pump Station was commissioned in 2023. In consultation with the local community, Council's Utilities Team is seeking to soften the visual impact of the building on the local area with mural featuring indigenous flora and fauna on two walls of the building.

How to submit your proposal

Interested parties can lodge their expression of interest via the online submission form above.

Expressions of interest close 5pm, Tuesday 4 February 2025

Initial expressions of interest will be assessed by Council and iwi pou ahurea (cultural managers) based on the artist's background, and capacity to deliver such a project. This initial stage will be carried out without considering any particular design.

After that, up to three artists will be shortlisted from the expressions of interest received. These artists will then be resourced to meet with iwi pou ahurea to discuss the project before submitting a concept design.

A single artist will then be commissioned to deliver the project.
