Tahunanui Slump - Resident Update 2

3 September 2022

Kia ora,

We all know that this has been a challenging few weeks, and we really do appreciate your cooperation as we have been dealing with this extremely challenging situation. We thought we’d let you know some good news.

Another temporary access opportunity:

The geotechnical team have been doing an incredible job and we now have a bit more certainty about the current movement of the slump. This means that we can progress with further controlled temporary access for the majority of the Tahunanui Slump properties.

On Sunday 4 September 2022, we will be able to offer temporary access for you to have a further look at your properties, and collect any essential items. Please note this will not be an opportunity to collect large items. You may take one light vehicle (per property) to help you move those items.

You will not need to book times, just look for the Recovery Team (in high-vis jackets). You must sign the register and listen to a quick safety briefing before you enter your property.

The times for each area are as follows:

10 am to 12 pm Moncrieff Avenue

12 pm to 2 pm Grenville Terrace (including affected property on Moana Avenue)

2 pm to 4 pm Rocks Road

A geotechnical engineer, building officer and Red Cross will be on site to make sure people remain safe.

Sadly, some properties will not be able to be entered back into at this stage. We will be in touch directly with those properties to let them know. Please only go back into your own property.

The process moving forward:

To change placard colours then there are a number of steps we need to go through. We need to make sure that the geotechnical risk has reduced sufficiently, the building is safe to enter, and the services (including water and sewerage pipes) are not damaged and safe to use.

On Monday, Nelson City Council contractors will start inspecting the piped network to make sure that it is not damaged. This will require the inspection of both public and private networks.

To do this work, we will need to have permission to access your property (not your homes or outbuildings). The inspection will involve contractors digging down and cutting into pipes to put CCTV cameras into. The pipes will be repaired after inspection. This inspection is essential in order to get people back into their homes.

If you do not consent to this work, then please let us know before Monday at engage@ncc.govt.nz.

Thanks again for your patience and we all hope the service check goes well next week.

Ngā mihi,

Nelson Tasman Recovery Team
