Final touches

12 June 2023

Almost there

The construction work on the Hastings Street Infrastructure Upgrade project is almost complete, with minor bits and pieces left to be finished. I would like to thank all residents and community groups who use Pioneer Park for their patience during this project. You now have a significantly improved water, wastewater, and stormwater service in the area.

A big thanks also to our contractor (Tasman Civil Ltd) as they have been busy resurfacing the road and reopening it to local traffic.

Changes to on-street parking

Nelson City Council (NCC) will be making changes to the on-street parking along Hastings Street by marking parking bays along the residential side of the street. The parking on the Pioneer Park side of the street has had to be removed as parking on the grassed area was damaging the roots of the heritage trees. Additional on-street parking bays will be installed on the southern side of Hastings Street (opposite the Spotlight store).

Connection to Public Stormwater Network

During this work we have noticed that a small number of properties are not connected to the public stormwater system. These properties have either no connection, or their stormwater is connected to the sewer network. This means that in heavy rainfall, our sewer networks get overloaded with water, which can lead to sewer spills.

Homeowners may not be aware that their property is not connected correctly to the stormwater network, but a stormwater connection to the sewer network is not legal and needs to be corrected. We’d strongly encourage those homes to connect to the right network and will be contacting ratepayers soon with quotations for that work to take place.

Future planned works

Construction work in Hastings Street is now largely completed. The next phase of the wider project involves upgrading the stormwater infrastructure in St Vincent Street. This work is already underway and is scheduled to be completed in November 2023.

The colder temperatures we are experiencing means that we cannot reinstate the grassed areas within Pioneer Park or the grass berms along Hastings Street. We will look to do this in early Spring.

Council has also received several requests to turn Hastings Street into a cul-de-sac. There is a formal process to go through to understand if the wider street would like to see this. We may look at this as part of a wider consultation in the next year or so.
