The shared path around Sunday Hole is now open!
This area is very popular with walkers, runners, mountain bikers, and people with dogs. However, the original pathway was narrow (about 1 metre wide) and difficult to navigate.
The new boardwalk pathway is now 2 metres wide and 66 metres long. It follows the natural contours of the hillside, with a colour chosen to match the surrounding rocks and gravel.
The contractors did a fantastic job laying the boardwalk, carefully cutting the pieces to fit alongside the jagged cliff face.
The handrail is designed to break away during floods to avoid obstructing the flow of water and debris. There's also a gap in the railing to allow access to the rocks and swimming hole from the path.
Additionally, the project included widening the path at both ends of the boardwalk and repairing a culvert that was washed away by flooding in August 2022.
The Maitai Shared Path around Sunday Hole is a popular track for recreation. But the track is too narrow, and a culvert was washed away in the August 2022 floods.
Work to widen the track and repair the culvert will begin on Monday 8 April 2024. This will require the closure of this section of the pathway. Please follow onsite signage directions. The work is expected to be completed by July 2024, weather dependent.
