Council reserves reopen following ungulate control operation

23 May 2025

23 May 2025 - Council reserves across Nelson will reopen to the public for recreational use from 3pm today (Friday 23 May), following the completion of the May 2025 ungulate control operation.

We extend our thanks to the community for their patience and understanding while reserves were temporarily closed for this essential biodiversity work. The annual operation plays a crucial role in protecting our native ecosystems and preserving the natural environment that makes Nelson such a special place to live and visit.

Beyond protecting our precious native flora and fauna, ungulate control is vital for safeguarding community assets, including our extensive network of walking and biking trails. Ungulates such as deer, goats and pigs can cause significant damage to track surfaces, erosion on slopes, and vegetation that helps stabilize our trail systems.

Important Access Notes

Please be aware that two areas remain closed to the public:

  • Glider Road (Marsden Valley) remains closed due to slip damage
  • Sharlands Forest - forestry operations are ongoing

We ask all community members to observe and respect closure signage in these areas for their own safety.
