The Traffic Calming Trial has been completed and the findings were presented to elected members at the 5 March 2026 Council meeting where they were asked to determine if the devices should remain in place, be altered or be removed.

After discussion, Council voted to remove the speed cushions on Bisley Avenue and Moana Avenue, while retaining the speed humps on Princes Drive.

The removal of the speed cushions on Bisley Avenue and Moana Avenue is scheduled for October 2026, during the next resealing period.

Over the years residents in the Port Hills have raised concerns about the speed and volume of vehicles travelling on their streets.

In 2021, as part of the Nelson Future Access Detailed Business Case, it was agreed that interventions were required to help make these streets safer and deter "rat-running" (people taking a short-cut through residential streets).

Traffic experts have developed a trial solution, which we will put in place and test for a two year period.

Nine speed cushions are being installed on Moana Ave and Bisley Ave and four speed humps on Princes Drive (between Princes Drive roundabout and the Tamaki Street walkway). The speed cushions are designed so that large vehicles like buses can easily straddle the cushion, whereas cars need to slow to navigate over them.

This work will begin on Monday 15 January 2024, and will be completed by mid-February 2024.
