Bowls Tāhunanui and Tāhunanui Tennis Club have operated from Tosswill Reserve, 131 Tāhunanui Drive, since the 1920s. The current leases have expired, or are due to expire, so Council proposes entering into new lease agreements with both parties.

Part of the land at Tosswill Reserve is Recreation Reserve. There is no current reserve management plan in place; therefore, notice is given pursuant to section 119 of the Reserves Act 1977 of the proposed leases of part of Tosswill Reserve to Bowls Tāhunanui Incorporated and Tāhunanui Tennis Club Incorporated.

If approved, it is anticipated that both leases will commence on or about 1 September 2026. The details of the proposed leases are as follows:

Bowls Tāhunanui Incorporated

  • Initial term of five (5) years, with three (3) rights of renewal of five (5) years each
  • Annual rental of $1,339 + GST, subject to review

Tāhunanui Tennis Club Incorporated

  • Initial term of five (5) years, with three (3) rights of renewal of five (5) years each
  • Annual rental of $503 + GST, subject to review

Bowls Tāhunanui has both an artificial and a natural green, which enables the club to operate year-round. During the summer season, the greens are used almost every day and, during winter, at least four days per week.

The club owns the clubhouse building and is responsible for all repairs, maintenance, and renewals to both the building and the greens. The club encourages other community groups to use the facilities and has recently replaced the surface of the artificial green.

The Tāhunanui Tennis Club operates four courts. There is also a small clubhouse on site, which is owned by the club. The club is responsible for all repairs, maintenance, and renewals to the building, courts, and fencing.

The club has recently received funding and obtained the necessary consents to install floodlights on the courts. It is anticipated this will enable the courts to be used regularly throughout the winter season and attract more members. Non-members are welcome to attend club days, and members of the public can book the courts via an online booking system.

Both clubs have strong memberships and provide high-quality sporting facilities for the community to enjoy.
