Starting after Easter

25 March 2021

We've been working on the job to replace 3 culverts along Rocks Road for some time now. This is really important work, as new culverts will help make sure stormwater is cleared faster from the foot of the Tahunanui Hills. This helps to prevent pooling, which can destabilise land, affecting the nearby houses or Rocks Road.

This is a challenging job, especially when you take into account the traffic that travels along Rocks Road every day. Installing these culverts will require us to dig trenches, which will disrupt traffic.

The traffic management for this job has to make sure work can be carried out safely, for both the workers and the public. This job will be carried out in 3 stages.

Stage 1 Outlet Works (seawall side) – approx. 2 ½ weeks. Two-way traffic flow will be maintained in temporary lanes at all times. (7.00am – 6.00pm)

Stage 2 Soft Road Closure - Crossing Works – approx. 2 weeks. During evening hours the road will be closed to all traffic, except heavy vehicles, residents and cyclists. Stop/Go traffic control in place, the road will be re-opened to two-way traffic each morning. (7.00pm – 6.00am)

Stage 3 Inlet Works (inland side) – approx. 1 ½ weeks. Two-way traffic flow will be maintained in temporary lanes at all times. (7.00am – 6.00pm)

The above dates are subject to change due to wet weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Temporary speed restrictions will be in place for this work, and traffic management staff will control traffic.

Stage 2:

During Stage 2 Road Crossing Works (digging a trench across the entire width of Rocks Road), all road users except heavy vehicles, residents and cyclists will be detoured via the following routes.

The detours will be:

Richmond to Nelson traffic:

From SH6/ Annesbrook roundabout head east along Whakatu Drive then continue straight through onto Waimea Road (over Bishopdale Hill) into the city. Turn left onto Halifax Street then turn right onto Haven Road.

Nelson to Richmond traffic:

From SH6/ Haven Road roundabout head south along Haven Road then turn left onto Halifax Street then turn right onto Rutherford Street/Waimea Road. Continue through onto Whakatu Drive.

Tahunanui Drive to Nelson traffic:
