Work gets underway

1 February 2024

On Wednesday 7 February, contractors will begin work on the intersection of Motueka Street and Tipahi Street as part of the Streets for People project. Streets for People is an NZTA Waka Kotahi funded project that allows us to introduce changes on a trial basis. We've worked closely with the hospital and residents to design changes intended to make the streets safer for people.

This work will require changes to the flow of traffic. The left turn from Waimea Road onto Motueka Street will be closed. Contractors will also be working on Franklyn Street. The left turn from Vanguard onto Franklyn heading up the hill to Waimea Road will be closed.

What are we doing?

  • Installing a raised crossing across Motueka Street
  • Creating a shared path from Motueka Street to Franklyn Street
  • Removal of 7 carparks along Tipahi Street for the shared pathway

Te Whatu Ora Nelson Hospital expressed a desire to encourage more of its staff to walk or ride to work while also asking us to keep as many on-street carparks as possible. Following negotiations, it was agreed to remove 14 carparks along Tipahi Street, and leaving 75 untouched.

Residents expressed concern about speeding cars in the area. Finding ways to slow them down would help reduce the stress they caused and make the neighborhood feel safer.

Nelson Boys College asked that we improve cycling infrastructure linking the college to the Railway Reserve to encourage more students to walk and ride to school.

Once these trials are in place, we will continue to ask for feedback from residents and users.
