In 2021, Council voted to proceed with a new library and soon Nelson gets to decide what will go on inside its doors.

Our current library has one of the most loved collections of books in New Zealand, with more borrowed per capita than anywhere else in New Zealand. Popular core services are here to stay, but do you have a bright idea to enhance them?

This is also a once-in-a-generation chance to create a new community space for everybody, where everybody belongs. If you were given a blank sheet of paper and asked to design a community space, what would you put in it?

If you want to participate, there will be a survey we would love you to complete, but also many other ways to send us your ideas.

Not sure what to write? Here’s a few ideas about what the space might be like:

  • open, welcoming and safe for everyone in the community – manaakitanga
  • a place to learn and discover knowledge and ideas
  • a place that stimulates and inspires innovation and creativity
  • has spaces to be quiet, relax and think
  • has spaces to make noise and interact with each other
  • a place for you and your whanau to connect with others in the community
  • a place to connect with mana whenua, with the past and the future of Nelson Whakatu.
