Nelson City Council is required to review how our communities are represented on the Council.
Before developing a proposal for the future, we are undertaking some early engagement to understand how well the current arrangements are working for you, what matters most to you in terms of representation, and whether there are any areas where improvements could be made.
This survey is an early opportunity to share your views. Your feedback will help inform the review and the development of a proposal for public engagement and consultation in 2027. There will be further opportunities to provide feedback through additional engagement planned for early 2027, before any proposal is prepared.
About Nelson’s current representation arrangements
Nelson city is divided into three wards:
- the Whakatū Māori Ward
- the Central General Ward
- the Stoke-Tāhunanui General Ward
The Council is comprised of the Mayor and 12 councillors elected as follows:
- 3 councillors elected by the electors of Nelson City as a whole
- 1 councillor elected by the electors of the Whakatū Māori Ward
- 4 councillors elected by the electors of the Central General Ward
- 4 councillors elected by the electors of the Stoke-Tāhunanui General Ward.
We want to know whether these arrangements are working well for Nelson’s communities and what, if anything, you think should change.
