Nelson City Council is calling for registrations of interest to lease the Maitai Valley Motor Camp at the Maitai Valley Reserve, 472 Maitai Valley Road.
This is a unique opportunity to manage a Campground that is nestled in a lush, peaceful valley surrounded by the rush of the river and native birdsong. Only minutes from the city, guests can easily access a range of mountain bike trails including the Coppermine, Sharlands and Codgers, walk along the Maitai River walkway or take a dip in the nearby swimming holes.
The Campground has 44 powered sites for casual camping, just over 300 non-powered sites and 5 cabins available for visitors. The current long-term occupant area at the campground is not compliant but a resource consent has been lodged to allow for this area to be approved as a Relocatable Home Park. This will allow for a total of 35 long term occupant sites with a maximum occupancy of 50.
The current wastewater system at the campground is being updated, which will allow for the removal of the current 80 person per night cap and return this to a maximum level of 400 people per night. The system will have additional holding capacity in case of a flood or power outage system and is designed to require minimal maintenance.
The Campground is located on Recreation Reserve and any lease will be granted in accordance with the Reserves Act 1977. It is a requirement of that Act that prior to granting a lease the Council must give public notice in accordance with section 119 specifying the lease to be proposed to be granted and must give full consideration in accordance with section 120 of the Act to all objections and submissions received in relation to the proposed lease.
If a preferred tenant is identified through this ROI process the Council must still follow the statutory requirements of the Reserves Act 1977 prior to the actual grant of the lease of the Campground. To avoid doubt, becoming the preferred party through the current process provides no guarantee that the lease will be granted.
Registration of Interest closes 23 October 2024.
