Central Government is continuing with the reform of the way water services are managed across the country.

The new policy and related legislation is called Local Water Done Well.

As part of developing a Water Services Delivery Plan under the Local Government Act 2024, Nelson City Council is required make a decision about how it will deliver water services to the community.

On 5 December 2024, Council agreed to go out for consultation with our partners, key stakeholders and the Nelson community on the options for our water. This is the first step in the process for Council.

We would like your feedback on the best way to deliver water supply, wastewater and stormwater services. The statement of proposal can be read here.

Consultation is open from 10 January until 4:00 pm 24 February 2025.

From the above meeting, the follwoing resolution was passed:


7.3 Deliberations on Local Water Done Well Service Delivery Options for Nelson City

Recommendation

That the Nelson City Council

1. Approves Local Water Done Well Services Delivery Option Model ‘A’: Retain the existing approach for delivering water services - as the service delivery model for the Water Services Delivery Plan; and

2. Notes that staff will prepare the Water Services Delivery Plan, in line with Council's decision, to meet the central government deadline of 03 September 2025; and

3. Notes that staff will bring the Water Services Delivery Plan to Council for adoption at its meeting on 07 August 2025.
