Nelson City Council is seeking your feedback on proposed improvements to the St Vincent Street cycleway.
The St Vincent Street cycleway was installed in 2014 and was one of the first of its kind in New Zealand. Since then, national design standards have been updated and the community has raised ongoing concerns about safety, particularly around driveway crossings and visibility.
In 2022, Council commissioned an independent safety review which found that visibility could be significantly improved, in particular where the cycleway crosses driveways and intersections, a view that matches feedback from the cycling community.
We are seeking your feedback on the below five options. All options involve some trade-offs and we want your input to help Council make an informed decision.
Keep the cycleway as it is. No parking is removed. This does not address safety concerns that have been raised over many years.
Remove the cycleway entirely, reverting the road to general traffic. This does not align with Council’s Active Transport Plan or the goal of providing transport choices for all road users.
Remove on-street car parking to improve visibility, and add a flush median to make better use of the road space and improve traffic flow. This is the option that best aligns with the safety review recommendations, active transport goals, and creating a more legible and safe cycleway.
Remove on-street car parking to improve visibility, but without a flush median. This improves safety but would leave unused road space, which may be confusing for road users.
Replace the separated cycleway with a painted on-road cycle lane (similar to other cycleways in Nelson). This aligns better with the rest of the Nelson cycle network but may be less suitable for less confident cyclists.
