An investigation in 2012 identified the building at 23 Halifax Street (known as the Mediterranean Foods building) as being earthquake-prone. This assessment required Council to find a solution to the building before January 2022.
Council decided that the best option for this building was to deconstruct it. Deconstruction differs from straight demolition, as all materials are assessed to see if they can be reused elsewhere. This is in keeping with Nelson City Council's declaration of a climate change emergency, reducing emissions and waste.
