Upgrading Nelson's Water Meters

In Nelson, our water use is measured using water meters. These are the dials - sometimes called 'tobies' - usually in a buried box on your berm. The current meters have been around for a while and so we will replace them around the city, starting in Tahunanui and Annesbrook in mid-May 2019. An accurate water meter also means you won't pay more than you need to.

By the end of June 2021, 11,012 new meters were installed as part of this project.

Overall this work will replace approximately 15,200 meters citywide. Work is expected to be completed in June 2022.

This work is now complete.

We’ll keep you updated

Nelmac will be doing the work, so you’ll see them in your street. We’ll tell you before the meter replacement happens. There’ll be a short water disruption while your new meter installed – and then you’re ready to go!

Get water shutdown notifications

Make sure to install the Antenno smartphone app if you would like a water shutdown notification. It’s free, easy, and you don’t need an account.

We will be updating this page as the project progresses. You can follow this project, so you’ll get messages on updates. You can also ask questions using the form on this page.

Only short traffic disruptions

There will be a small effect on traffic. Footpath or driveway access maybe be affected for short periods. You will be advised of any larger impact if it is needed.

Thanks for your understanding while we install the new meters. It's a big job but with a little patience, these new meters will be working in our Smart Little City before we know it.
